Kalapi is pseudonym of Sursinhji Takhtsinhji Gohil. He was the king of Lathi (Dist. Amreli).
Kalapi was born in 1874. He became the heir-apparent at the age of 12. At the age of 15 he married to Rajba and Anandiba. Rajba, was the princess of Roha (Kutch), while Anandiba was princess of Kotada (Saurashtra).
Ramaba was eight year older than Kalapi while Anandiba was two year older than Kalapi.
He left the College in 1891 and was deputed on a tour of India. During the tour he visited many places from Rawalpindi and Srinagar in the north to Rameshwaram in the South. In 1895, Sursinhji assumed the reins of Lathi. He was endowed with a poetic temperament. His mind was ordainly devoted to the peaceful life.
When Kalapi was of 20, he fallen love with Shobhana. She was serving as a maid in their family. She was of 13 years old at that time. Probably this was the reason of conflicts with his wife. Kalapi is killed at the age of 26 by poisioning by his own wife.
In 26 years of his life he created 250 poems including 15,000 verses. Kalapi composed and published his poems under book ‘Kalapi No Kekarav’ is extremely popular.
